Vaigai Basin Workshop

Vaigai river in Tamil Nadu flowing 150 miles (240 km) generally southeast rises in the Varushanad Hills of western Tamil Nadu, it initially flows northeast through the Kambam and Varushanad valleys. In its central reaches the Vaigai flows eastward into the Vaigai reservoir at Narasingapuram. Near Sholavandan it bends to the southeast, passing Madurai town, Ramanathapuram, Sivagangai, Virudunagar on to Bay of Bengal.

TVNN organized regional workshop for the farmers of Madurai, Sivagangai, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Theni, Dindikal and Pudukottai districts on 26-08-2004 at Madurai. Mr. Khadiravan, Farmer and Advocate, Mr. Chinna Adaikan, Mr. Meenakshi Sundaram, Mrs. Soundaravalli, Mr. Ponnaian, Mr. Shanmugavel, Mr. Rasu and others lead the deliberations of the workshop. The major issues discussed in the workshop are pollution, main system management, farmers’ participation in opening and closure of dam, etc.

The representatives of JalaSpandana (Mr. A. Ramaswamy - President and R. Doraiswamy - Convener) and TVNN (Mr. AVS Velumayil - President, M. Murugan - EC Member and Mr. K. Thachinamurthy - Coordinator) participated in the workshop. The district level committees for five districts formed are as follows,
