Vizianagaram one of the coastal districts in North eastern part of Andhra Pradesh depends on minor and medium irrigation for its water resources. About 225 farmers along with 10 officers of Irrigation Department participated in the workshop. The major issues in the district are again encroachment of water bodies, diversion of irrigation water from Thotapally barrage to Vishakapatnam city for drinking purpose and sustainability of WUAs.
Farmers shared their experiences as representatives of WUAs and rising issues in legal court (Thotappally barrage case). At the end an exclusive committee for Vizianagaram was formed to further the farmers lobby on water issues in the district. Mr. K.V. Suryanarayana Raju (former President of District Cooperative Marketing Society (DCMS) and President WUA, Nellimarla village and mandal, Vizianagaram district) is elected as President along with 10 executive members to initiate further activities in the region.
