1. Mr. Salah Darghouth, World Bank to be the next chairperson of INPIM, the international network on participatory and irrigation management.

Salah Darghouth, New Chairperson of INPIM.

The Board of Directors of the International Network on Participatory Irrigation Management (INPIM) has unanimously elected Mr. Salah Darghouth of the World Bank, as the new Chairperson INPIM, succeeding Mr. François-Marie Patorni who lays down office this month. Mr. Darghouth assumes his new position starting January 1st, 2002.

INPIM is a global non-profit organization based in Washington D.C, USA. Its main mission is to promote and facilitate water user participation and public-private partnership in irrigation management through knowledge sharing, exchange of best practices and lessons of experience, and training.

Since he joined the World Bank in 1979, Mr. Darghouth has held a large number of professional, leadership and managerial positions in the fields of Rural Development, Water and Natural Resources Management, and Environment. As Sector Manager, he currently leads the Bank's efforts in promoting the water and environment agenda in the Middle East and North Africa Region. In addition, Mr. Darghouth has been an active member of several World Bank sector boards and thematic groups focusing on rural development, water and environment.

Mr. Darghouth is a Tunisian national. He holds a Master's Degree equivalent in Agricultural Sciences and Economics from the Institut National Agronomique (INA) in Paris, France, and a Ph.D equivalent in Rural Engineering and Water Resources Management from the Ecole Nationale du Génie Rural, des Eaux et Forêts (ENGREF), also in Paris, France. INPIM shall have the privilege of growing into a stronger organization under the dynamic leadership and guidance of Mr. Darghouth.

Let me take this opportunity to inform you that the next major event of INPIM will be the Sixth International Seminar on Participatory Irrigation Management to be held in Beijing, China in March or April 2002. The exact date will be announced soon.
