6) ILRI's 9th International Drainage Workshop themed "Drainage for a Secure Environment and Food Supply" September 10 - 13, 2003 in Utrecht, The Netherlands

Much has changed in the field of drainage over the years and in the water management sector in general. The 9th International Drainage Workshop will give participants the opportunity to rethink, re-evaluate, modify, and share findings through collegial interchange. The workshop will be held from September 10 - 13, 2003 in Utrecht, The Netherlands. The theme of the Workshop will be "Drainage for a Secure Environment and Food Supply".

This workshop endeavors to stress the importance of drainage to the general public, politicians, planners and designers, and to the organizations that formulate agricultural and IWRM policies. Hence the conclusions of the discussions and presentations during this workshop need to be widely disseminated.

The main objective of the workshop is to discuss the role of drainage in integrated water resource management in agriculture. Four main topics and twenty-one underlying subjects have been selected for discussion in the IDW9. The topics reflect a request for input on technical and local level (Topics 1: Innovative Drainage Technologies in Agriculture), regional level (Topics 2: Drainage: a Tool for Integrated Water Resources Management in Agriculture and 3: Drainage Institutions for Participatory Development) and stakeholders involvement (Topics 4: Capacity Building in Drainage). The participants will discuss materials, designs, management, environmental impacts, economics, and, most of all, relationships between the various disciplines. To structure this discussion, the organizing committee seeks contributions in the form of research papers, state-of-the-art papers, discussion papers and posters, and active involvement in the discussions by workshop participants. Prepare all participants for the workshop; the organizing committee wants to start the discussion straight away via internet, so that they can use the actual workshop to formulate recommendations.

8) Water: Source of Food Security -- International Electronic Conference on prospects for Agricultural Water use in the 21st Century - A FAO contribution to the debate on sustainable use of water resources

The coming World Food Day (16 October 2002) will be celebrating the important role of water for a healthy and sufficient food production for the world's growing population, under the devise "Water: Source of Food Security". For the Land and Water Development Division of FAO, this will be the start of a series of events to bring the issues related to the sustainable use, development and management of water resources to the forefront of the political debate during the year 2003.

As a first step, FAO will organize, from September to November 2002, an e-mail conference on the theme. This conference is open to all interested parties, stakeholders and experts dealing with water resource development and management for agriculture. Consortium members are particularly encouraged to participate, as the topics which will be discussed are closely related to those concerning the Dialogue on Water, Food, and Environment. Global food security is a moral imperative, but it is also a necessary condition to eliminate the "poverty-trap". Poor and food insecure families living in the rural areas often have no alternative than to use their resources unsustainably.

The key-question in this debate is: How can development and management of water resources contribute to Food Security and Poverty Alleviation while conserving the resource base to maintain environmental integrity of natural systems and their inherent productivity?

To deal with these issues in a manageable form, the subject has been split into five sub-themes, as follows:

1. Water for sustainable rural development and poverty alleviation
2. Enhancing productivity of water in agriculture
3. Risk management in agricultural water use
4. Alleviating environmental costs of water resource development
5. Modernization of irrigation water management

These five sub-themes, will serve as guidelines for the discussions. This activity aims specifically to collect, discuss, analyze and disseminate case studies, examples of success stories, especially at the local level, and on-going research in the field of water management for agriculture and rural development.

If you wish to participate, send an e-mail message to mailserv@mailserv.fao.org  leaving the subject blank and entering in the first line of the message the command: subscribe WSFS-L

9) Regional Consultation Workshop on Water and Poverty, Dhaka, Bangladesh, 22-26 Sep 2002

The Regional Consultation Workshop on Water and Poverty is part of the WPI consultation process to prepare for the 3rd World Water Forum (WWF) to be held in Kyoto, Japan, in March 2003. The WWF will serve to share information and highlight innovative practices in the water sector. It will focus on actions taken around the world to increase water security in the 21st century. Water security implies that all people, including the world's poor, have access to water services to meet their basic needs are able to take advantage of the opportunities that water resources provide are protected from water-related hazards have recourse where conflicts over water arise. The needs of the world's poorest people and poorest nations are seen as the highest priority for the international community. Water and Poverty will be a core theme at the Forum.

Objectives

The Workshop will provide key opportunity to bring together different stakeholders to consult on the issues of poverty and water security for the region. It will also build better mutual understanding of poverty-water links and will offer a dynamic and interactive process designed to highlight good practices on water resource management in the Asia and Pacific region promote further action at the local level to ensure the attainment of water security, especially for the poor strengthen the regional network of development agencies working on the various issues of water and its link to poverty reduction.
